Who this agreement is between
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are between you — the parent or legal guardian creating a Bóyǎ household account — and Bóyǎ ("we", "us"). By signing in or letting a child in your household use Bóyǎ, you accept these Terms on behalf of yourself and every child profile under your account. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to create a Bóyǎ account. A child under 18 may use Bóyǎ only through a child profile created under a parent or guardian household account, with your verifiable consent. Bóyǎ is intended for learners ages 6–13 within the household tier; older learners and adult learners are welcome but the product is built around the child experience.
- Parent or guardian is the account holder of record
- Child profiles are sub-accounts under that household
- Child profiles cannot self-register, self-pay, or self-delete
- School and tutor tiers are governed by separate written agreements
Your account and your kids
You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for every action taken under your household account, including those taken by child profiles. If you believe your account has been compromised, email hello@boyapp.io with subject "Account" and we will lock it within one business day.
- One household per parent email
- You may add and remove child profiles at any time
- You may transfer ownership of the household by emailing us
- We may suspend an account that is clearly being used to harm a child
Your license to use Bóyǎ
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Bóyǎ for the private, non-commercial education of children in your household (or, for the school tier, your enrolled students). You do not buy the software or the content; you buy the right to use it.
What you may not do
Bóyǎ exists to teach kids Mandarin. Anything that pulls in the other direction is out of scope.
- No scraping, mirroring, or bulk download of vocabulary, sentences, audio, or curriculum
- No reverse engineering of the app, the tutor prompts, or the duel scoring
- No reselling, sublicensing, or republishing content
- No abuse of the AI tutor or attempts to jailbreak it off-curriculum
- No creating fake accounts, fake households, or fake school enrollments
- No use that would violate any law or another person's rights
Content and intellectual property
Bóyǎ's branding, written copy, lesson structure, audio, illustrations, game mechanics, and software are owned by Bóyǎ or licensed to us. Third-party curriculum frameworks and research we build on are credited on the attribution page and remain the property of their respective holders. Display names that a parent or child enters belong to that family; you grant us a limited license to display them inside the product.
- HSK 3.0 curriculum framework is published by Hanban / the Center for Language Education and Cooperation
- Spaced-repetition scheduling builds on the open-source FSRS algorithm by Jarrett Ye
- See /legal/attribution for the complete list of sources and licenses
Subscriptions, billing, and refunds
Bóyǎ has a free tier and paid family and school tiers. Paid plans renew automatically until cancelled. You can cancel any time from the parent dashboard or by emailing hello@boyapp.io with subject "Billing" — cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. We refund the most recent charge within 14 days of payment, no questions asked, if the child has used the app for fewer than three sessions in that period.
Termination
You can delete your household account at any time from settings, or by emailing hello@boyapp.io with subject "Delete". We honor deletion requests within seven days. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe are being used to harm a child; in non-urgent cases we'll contact the parent first.
Disclaimers and limitation of liability
Bóyǎ is provided on an "as is" basis. We try hard, but we do not warrant uninterrupted service, perfect translations, or that your child will reach a particular HSK level by a particular date — language learning is not a vending machine. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of these Terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (for example, gross negligence, or statutory consumer rights).
Changes to these Terms
When we change these Terms materially we'll email the parent account on file and post a notice in the app at least 14 days before the change takes effect. Minor edits (typos, clarifications, broken links) we just fix. The effective date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Bóyǎ is incorporated, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Before filing anything formal, please email hello@boyapp.io with subject "Dispute" — we resolve almost everything that way. Nothing in this section prevents you from exercising rights you have under the consumer-protection laws of where you live.
Contact
Questions about these Terms go to hello@boyapp.io with subject "Terms". For child-safety concerns, use subject "Safety" — those are routed first.
